Consider not bringing pets some get very scared of the loud booms. The nation's capital city draws visitors from all across the country to watch the fireworks display and the preceding 4th July concert, and although it is free to attend you will need to get down there good and early to secure a decent vantage point, although the aerial nature of the fireworks themselves does of course means they can be well seen across a pretty wide area.

The talismanic 4th July fireworks are surely the Macy's version in New York, but Washington runs them pretty close, and will certainly be packed with crowds to enjoy all the day's celebrations. With a number of top quality rooftop bars dotted across the city too there is ample opportunity to vary your location make this a truly unique and personal occasion. The fireworks take place on The Mall, usually at around the same time the Capitol Fourth concert is ending approximately 9. The fireworks are launched from the reflecting pool area, so the optimum viewing spots are obviously on the National Mall itself, the Jefferson Memorial, FDR Memorial and in Potomac park.

Note that the viewing points on the National Mall near the Reflecting Pool and Washington Monument require access through special security gates, so pay careful attention to what you have in your bags and pockets.
